*Values represented on this chart were taken from the high and low sales prices that comparable Steinway's sold for during each year indicated from 1986 - 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area. On the new pianos, the low sales prices are based upon a consistent 40% margin for the dealer and the high sales prices are based upon a consistent 60% margin for the dealer. On the used pianos, the prices are based upon actual sales.
From our experience as a dealer prior to 1994, we found that a dealer needs to make a minimum of a 40% margin to cover their cost of doing business. From this margin, they have to pay for moving, tuning, dealer prep, sales commissions, referral fees, overhead, advertising, administrative staff, etc.
